Wisdom Tooth and Significant Bone Loss

The patient is a 28 year old, non-smoking male. He presents with significant bone loss due to a follicular cyst. During a routine check-up, the X-ray examination revealed the presence of a follicular cyst weakening the second molar in the short term and the mandibula.

The extraction of the wisdom tooth is mandatory. Filling of the bone defect will be carried out during the extraction step.

The pericoronal cyst associated with the impacted wisdom tooth caused extensive bone loss. Tooth 47 (#31) shows significantly reduced vitality. The clinician will perform a surgical extraction and combine it with a grafting procedure. Grafting will help limit bone collapse and reduce the risk of compromising the second molar.

Dr. Berg performs mandatory root canal treatment before performing the extraction.

The clinician used biphasic calcium sulfate (Augma Bond Apatite®) as the grafting material, eliminating the need for a membrane to cover the graft. Its rapid setting properties provided immediate stability and improved surgical efficiency.

The planned outcome is complete bone regeneration and preservation of the second molar.
